At Root to Rise/ The Phoenix you will spend your time there practicing yoga or other
forms of spiritual method healing. You will sign people in, sit in on recovery meetups,
participate in team meetings, create handouts, and learn! You will practice social, professional,
and yoga skills! The most enjoyable part of the internship would be the uniqueness of it and the
people who work with and meet. Overall it is a very safe and enjoyable environment to work in. I
would recommend this site to students who are interested in the substance abuse recovery
community, spiritual methods of healing, or a laid back but hard working student. Don’t let the
yoga scare you away! It is beginners yoga that all can do and you will learn as you go! It is a
very safe space and judgement free zone! I enjoyed every minute I spent there!

Most of my days spent at my site involved either observing the organization’s services, assisting with various fundraising activities (e.g., developing fundraising letters, mailings, shadowing my supervisor, or assisting with fundraising events), assisting with administrative tasks such as updating and printing monthly schedules, and also helping with the upkeep of the yoga studio. Coming to understand Root to Rises’ belief that a combination of physical and mental diversion can counteract addiction relapse and seeing how their services support individuals recovering from addiction or other mental health issues, is a valuable benefit of this experience.
In my opinion, the best part of interning at this organization was all of the personal connections and relationships I got to make with both the staff and the people from the community that came to attend their classes or other events Root to Rise held. For any future students that may want to intern here I would suggest doing so if you are one to be open-minded, flexible with your schedule, and enjoy making connections with people and actually getting to know and talk with them. Through the internship, you will get a chance to practice your creativity, learn and improve organizations skills, practice leading tasks, and gain a sense of pride when you too list your name on some of their materials as the new “Root to Rise” intern.
