Our Internship at Neuropsychology Rehabilitation Services and Lifespan Counseling.
Neuropsychology is the study of the structure and function of the brain and how they relate to psychological processes and behaviors. Neuropsychologists provide assessment and treatment for disorders related to brain functioning.
NRS is a multi-disciplinary health psychology practice located in Neptune and Lakewood, New Jersey. They provide neuropsychological services that offer rehabilitation for cognitive, emotional and behavioral brain-based disorders. The LifeSpan counseling aspect offers traditional psychological services for patients with a range of mental health issues. They also provide forensic services in order to define the functional outcome of acquired neurological injuries in personal injury cases. The main goal of NRS is to offer the patient comprehensive quality care from the time of consultation through treatment.
Administering a neuropsychological examination (NPE) provides an understanding of a patient’s strengths and limitations, perceptual skills (hearing, seeing, feeling), attention and concentration skills, memory, speech and language functions, visual spatial functions, speed of new learning (processing), learning capacity, background intellectual level, speed and coordination of simple motor responses and emotional and behavioral characteristics.
The populations they treat range from pediatrics through geriatrics. The NRS pediatric program consists of testing children with a variety of neurological conditions such as ADHD, autism, developmental delays, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries and epilepsy. They also tests adults of all ages with issues such as, memory loss, dementia, anxiety, depression and stroke.
Our internship responsibilities include administrative tasks such as copying, filing charts, and organizing reports. We were able to shadow our supervisors while they administered, scored and interpreted tests. We attended staff meetings to learn more about the functioning of the practice. We were also assigned to research topics related to neuropsychology and assist the practice by proposing marketing ideas to promote the practice.
Jessica: During my first observation, I was informed that a young boy brought knives to school. He suffered from a history of both sexual and physical abuse in a foster home. After he was adopted, his parents noticed his violent, aggressive behavior and referred him to a neuropsychologist. The NPE was the missing piece of the puzzle that identifed the cause of his problems and the doctors at NRS were able to coordinate a treatment plan based upon the results of neuropsychological testing.
Neha: For my little piece project I created two newsletters to inform local pediatricians, psychologists, neurologists and other doctors in the community about trending mental health disorders and how NRS services can help. These articles included an overview of the disorders, signs and symptoms, red flags and assessment/ and treatment options. Jess helped to develop new activities for future undergraduate interns at NRS, inculding activities where the staff and interns of NRS present at local schools, coordinate workshops and information sessions with students who want to further their careers in neuropsychology.
This internship helped us acquire personal and professional skills such as: Self-confidence, independence, creative thinking, active listening, how to balance personal life and work life, initiative and leadership skills. We learned how to communicate in a professional setting with our supervisors and with each other and how to manage our time with projects.
We both chose NRS because we knew we wanted to pursue careers in clinical psychology and gain knowledge about the neuropsychological aspect of the field. Prior to my internship I never thought about working with children but now I realize that I am comfortable working with people of all ages. I also learned a lot about the importance of assessment and testing. My experience here opened my eyes to other alternatives and options in my future profession.
