Student Feedback
I mostly spent my days at the site filing client’s information, sitting in on group sessions, occasionally updating outreach contacts, making copies of activity sheets/client identifications, helping clients set up emails, organizing sign-in sheets by date, contacting individuals who have fallen out of compliance with the organization, and other clerical duties. Skills I have learned and improved include interpersonal skills, a new understanding of those with criminal backgrounds, typical clerical duties, I have gained knowledge on a variety of resources available for those in need, I now know the ins and outs of the program, I am now familiar with SalesForce (software used to keep track of all clients’ information), and a new appreciation for reentry as a whole.
For me, the most enjoyable part of my experience was sitting in on the group sessions and establishing a connection with the clientele. I loved hearing all of their different stories and how they demonstrate resilience by seeking out these services in order to better their lives. I have heard heartbreaking and truly inspiring stories, which I feel has changed not only my perceptions of individuals with a criminal background but me as a person. I feel a student who wishes to work with prison populations or those being released from prison would be best for this site. A student who wishes to help people get back on their feet, and is comfortable working with a stigmatized population would thrive at this site. I believe when choosing where to apply, do not be afraid to work somewhere that is slightly out of your comfort zone, it could really be a life-changing experience.
