Student Feedback

Site: Long Branch High School

Hello! My name is Bethelen Sanchez, and I had the greatest opportunity to intern under a school psychologist at long branch high school. My days were spent learning all the ins and outs of the profession from my supervisor, administering in-class observations, translating for students who spoke primarily Spanish (my Spanish skills came in handy because of the elevated Hispanic population), and spending time with the students in the autism class! Report writing for observations, professional communication with teachers and child study team workers, and meeting etiquette were all skills that were practiced. The most gratifying aspect of my experience was, without a doubt, everything; to have had so much exposure to such an amazing career fills me with gratitude; there was nothing about it that I didn't appreciate. This work requires a lot of advocacy and compassion for the students; thus, I believe someone who is driven, energetic, and a supportive leader would be the ideal match for this position.

I spent most of my time at my site observing and shadowing my supervisor, the school psychologist. I observed testing, sat in on parent meetings and IEP meetings, and did classroom observations. I also spent a lot of time helping out around the special education classroom. I learned a lot about learning disabilities such as ADHD, and also about the IEP process. I practiced listening skills when I needed to comfort a child and writing skills when I wrote up mini-observations. Interning at this site was enjoyable because the staff is so welcoming and supportive, and all the kids are adorable. If you are friendly, motivated, and interested in school psychology, this would be a great site for you! This really was such a great opportunity because I got to see a wide variety of things that school psychologists do on a daily basis. I even got to do hands-on assignments by consoling kids when they were upset, which was really challenging but a valuable experience.
