My Internship at Monmouth University - Human Resources Department
My name is Kristin Waring. My site for this Field Experience class was the Office of Human Resources here at Monmouth University.
The office is located on the third floor of Wilson Hall. It provides numerous services, including recruitment of administrators, faculty and staff, benefits enrollment, compensation management, and student employment. They answer any questions about potential employment. The Office of Human Resources posts official labor notices on bulletin boards on campus.
While interning, many of my responsibilities involved the time management system, Ultipro. Using this system, I entered student employee information for all of the new hires and removed student employees from the system database that no longer work at Monmouth. I was also given the task of scanning the benefits section of employee files into the computer. Additionally, I was able to accompany my supervisor to Student Employment to assist with timesheets and payroll. I was given the opportunity to observe numerous meetings with potential new performance management systems, new hire orientations, and benefits meetings with the insurance company, Cigna.
Because of the variety of duties I had as an intern, there are many interesting stories I could tell you about my experience, however one opportunity specifically stands out to me. Sitting in on a new hire orientation for a new employee in the Maintenance Department was an experience I will never forget. This new employee expressed so much joy and humbleness in being selected to work at Monmouth. It really touched my heart to see his enthusiasm. When he came in, he was given a large amount of paperwork, a map and an entire binder of general information about the university. The benefits of being a Monmouth University employee were then explained to him. He was also informed on the proper procedure when taking time off due to illness or vacation. We then walked him to the Police Station to have his employee ID card made. This could have been an extremely overwhelming day for this young man, but the people of the Human Resources Department made sure it was a great experience for him. I loved seeing this side of H.R. because I was able to tell how much of a difference working in that field makes in someone’s life. People working in Human Resources are the first faces new hires see when they start their job, and the genuine concern they showed in their interactions with them was inspirational.
For my “Little Piece Project,” I updated posters with Federal and NJ state laws for employees and employers. These laws are posted right outside the Office of Human Resources. It is very important to make sure the most recent version of each law is posted. I researched each law put in place by NJ and the Federal government and updated anything that was not already updated on the board. There is a new law that was just passed in New Jersey called the NJ Safe Act. This gives benefits to employees who are victims of domestic violence. Since it was just passed, I also looked into the responsibilities of the employers pertaining to this law. I found out that the law must be posted for the employees to see; therefore, I made sure it was posted on the board.
This internship has affected my life professionally because before taking this class I was unsure of what I wanted to do after I graduated. I decided to take this opportunity to get hands-on experience in human resources because this was a field that always interested me. Through this internship, I was able to understand the different aspects of a career in this field. I instantly became so fascinated with it and loved everything that I learned. I know that no matter what career path I enter, I want to feel like I am making a difference in people’s lives, and I saw firsthand how impactful Human Resources careers can be. I have gained experience that a lot of undergraduate students do not have. I want to go to graduate school, and I am really confident that my application will stand out due to this internship.
Personally, I’ve had such a successful time in the Office of Human Resources, from when I started in September. I have completed my required hours for my class, but I am continuing to intern there because I love it. This experience has changed my life by giving me the confidence that I can handle any assignment given to me. This experience has also showed me that I can be successful in the work field, as well as perform tasks on my own without any help from others. I have always been extremely reliant on others, and this internship has proven to me that I can really be successful as an individual.
