Department of Probation
Overview
The New York City Department of Probation (DOP) offers interns an opportunity to gain real-world experience that directly relates to a variety of academic disciplines, including Public Administration, Research/Evaluation, Criminal Justice, Human Services, Social Work, Law, Pre-Law, Counseling, Sociology, Psychology, Human Resource Management, Information Technology, and Management Analysis. College interns are asked to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week for a period of three months to one year.
Duties
Human Resources
This assignment requires a three-day-per-week commitment, with each workday lasting at least four hours. A full-time commitment is preferred. The intern will gain experience with:
- Performance evaluation
- HR information system design, development, and implementation
- Compensation and benefits
Office of Information Technology
This opportunity is ideal for students interested in learning how government agencies use information technology to better serve the public. Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Web page design: CSS, HTML
- Java frameworks: Ibatis, hibernate, ant
- XML IDE's: xml, spy, stylus studio
- .NET frameworks: zedgraphs, dotnetmuke
- Concepts represented by national initiatives of the GJXDM and the NIEM
- Editing agency intranet page
- Assist the Help Desk in solving hardware issues and supporting programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Provide administrative assistance to the Chief Information Officer, Director of Application Development, and Director of Networking
- Install, maintain, and repair of workstations and printers.
- Maintain and configure network routers, switches, and firewalls
Management Analysis Planning
The Management Analysis Planning unit seeks Research Assistant Interns, who will perform the following tasks:
- Generate population profile reports using Microsoft Access and Excel
- Create graphs on Excel data
- Create electronic spreadsheets for population profiling and statistical analysis
- Input data in appropriate databases and programs such as Quickbooks and Peachtree
- Compile data from a variety of sources into departmental reports
- Work with analysts to produce a variety of statistical and case detail reports, graphs and maps
- Establish and maintain updated files, records and other departmental documentation
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties, including providing administrative support

Specific Requirements
Human Resources
Education Requirements:
- A student working towards a Bachelors Degree in Human Resources or a related field, with the intent of pursuing a career in HR
- Graduate students will be considered but are not preferred
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
- Strong communication skills
