Student Feedback
A typical day at this internship includes checking in with your shift commander, patrolling the streets of Asbury Park in a squad car with your partner, and even, if you are lucky, making some arrests and booking in offenders. There is also the option of attending court on Friday’s in order to gain the insight to the legal side of the internship. This internship requires a thick skin, as most police officers have a joking nature, and bond through joking and messing with one another; if you aim to be seen as an equal and more than just an intern, you must be able to joke back, and even be willing to be the butt of some of the jokes.
This internship strengthens your assertiveness, and forces you to grow in terms of determination and organization. You will be taught how to file incident reports, taught the chain of command, and even how to book and process offenders. Its enjoyable aspects come with the bonds you form with the officers. These men and women are extremely open and honest and will do whatever they can to make your internship a wonderful learning experience. They will teach you lessons beyond the law enforcement field and beyond their requirements, purely for the sake of helping guide you and make you a stronger, better person. Every shift, should you connect with these men and women, is one of openhearted discussion and learning.
The only drawback in this internship comes with the limitations put upon you by the department. Because you, more likely than not, are not a fully sworn officer, or lack proper training, you will be confined to the car most of the time. You won’t be able to necessarily get out or physically assist your partner in arresting an offender, but do not think that this means you will not be able to see some very exciting things. Within the first month of interning, I was able to see a foot pursuit and a serious drug bust. This internship is not for the faint of heart, but it does offer wonderful experiences to those who know they have an interest in law enforcement and forensic psychology.
