My Internship at ParentTrain
My name is Angelica Scheddin and I completed my internship at ParentTrain in Wayne, NJ with Dr. Maria Salvanto.
ParentTrain is a multidisciplinary team of licensed professionals who provide assessment and treatment for children and parents dealing with behavioral problems, adoption and foster care issues and family court matters.
During my internship I was able to observe the counseling and assessment process and witness clients’ progress. One interesting case involved a parent who was struggling with having her child’s needs met in the classroom. I was able to see how the assessment process leads to recommendations and positive changes for the child.
I was also able to learn more about forensic psychology. Dr. Salvanto works with the Passaic county courts and prisons doing psychological assessments and tests on inmates. She also works for the family court system with adoptions, child abuse cases, foster care and child custody disputes. I was able to learn about the role of psychological assessment with these types of cases and how she prepares to testify in court.
For my “little piece project” I created a bulletin cork board with information, resources and annoucements for her patients that will be hung in her waiting room.
My internship has been an eye-opening and wonderful experience for me to not only learn what is necessary to help clients, but also to understand how much work it takes to run your own practice. I learned about insurance reimbursement, finances, business management and how important it is to be highly organized.
This internship was an amazing experience. I was invited to continue to intern at ParentTrain and was told that I would be a pleasure to eventually have in the workplace at ParentTrain once I become a licensed professional counselor. This has given me more motivation to continue my education and faith in having a successful career.
This class has been one of the most influential classes I’ve taken in college and has allowed me to not only gain applied experience, put also my foot in the door and confirm my career options.
