Student Feedback
My time at the Academy Learning Center was incredibly enjoyable. I spent my days in an Autism Specialized Classroom with the most wonderful students, aids, and teacher who was my supervisor. I would help the students with their schoolwork, but my role was to help the students with their emotional expression, since they do have trouble with understanding what certain emotions mean, and how to properly express them. I did this with the students by conducting projects that they can use when I am with them or not and by using coping techniques, like breathing, to help them control their emotions. The skills I was able to practice was communication with students and faculty, patience in working with those with disabilities, and my creativity skills in thinking of ways to help students learn about emotions in fun and informative ways. I learned that working with students with disabilities is very much different than working with students without disabilities, however, I learned that it was much more interesting and enjoyable. If you are interested in working with students with Autism or Multiple Disabilities, this is a great opportunity. You learn a lot about their daily routines, what they need to accomplish in order to achieve, why certain behaviors occur, and how to read behavioral plans and IEP’s. They have many different services (Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy. Occupational Therapy) that they do throughout the day with specialists, so you learn what they do in those and why they do it. I had the most wonderful time and would recommend to anybody interested. It made me want to work with this population in the future even more.
