Duties

Volunteers/Interns are a valuable resource to Abilities in Action. Volunteers/Interns shall agree to observe all policies and procedures, maintain confidentiality and perform their duties while remaining true to the mission, vision and procedures of Abilities in Action.

While we understand that Volunteers/Interns are eager to learn, we ask that they refrain from asking questions about a child's condition in the presence of the child or their family. Questions can be written down in a notebook to be discussed at a later time.

In addition to observing our therapists, Volunteers/Interns are also to assist our therapists by performing the duties listed below:

· Clean and organize work areas.

· Disinfect equipment and toys after treatment.

· Change linens, such as crash mat pads or bean bag covers.

· Organize treatment supplies in cupboards, closets and cabinets.

Student Feedback

During my time at Abilities in Action I mainly observed since undergraduate students don’t take HIPAA training, we are not allowed to be hands-on with the children. So I observed and took notes and helped out wherever I could in order to lighten the therapist’s workload with things like cleaning, organizing, setting up. I learned a lot about creativity that you need, especially in Occupational Therapy sessions, because there are not set lesson plans and I also learned how important it is to ask questions and gain as much knowledge as you possibly can from your experience. The staff was absolutely amazing and so welcoming and they were always very open to teach and make sure that I was in the loop and kept me informed throughout my time there. And the clients and families are also amazing and meeting them really shows you why these therapists do what they do and it is such a rewarding job. I think anyone that has a strong passion for working with children and wants to be in a fun and creative environment would thrive at this place. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and help out, it’s an amazing staff to really open up and learn with! ~Hayden Forbes, FA24

Abilities in Action is a pediatric private practice that provides speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and feeding therapy to children and adolescents. I had an excellent time as an intern at their Wall location. My daily responsibilities included observing speech therapy sessions one-on-one with my supervisor, assisting her with office tasks, and engaging with children during sessions. When my supervisor did not have an appointment, I was able to observe occupational and physical therapy sessions as well. I learned a lot about different speech disorders and their treatment methods. I also learned about emotional regulation and de-escalation strategies for toddlers and young children. I really enjoyed every day I spent at Abilities in Action. Gaining hands-on therapy experience was fascinating for me as someone who is very interested in the field of speech-language pathology. There was nothing about this position that I did not enjoy. I loved being able to see the same clients every week and watch their progress over the course of the semester. It was also very interesting getting to sit in on occupational and physical therapy sessions for children of various ages. The type of student that I think would be best fit for this site is someone who is interested in working with children and pursuing either speech pathology, occupational, or physical therapy as a possible career. Even if you are not 100% set on one of these careers, interning at Abilities in Action will be rewarding regardless. It was truly amazing to develop a rapport with the children and see them grow over the course of the semester. ~Emma Rizzuto, FA24
